Here are some basic yoga tips you can use and take with you
anywhere.
- Wear comfortable clothing to move
in: shorts, T-shirts, leotards, sweats, etc.
- We practice in our bare feet, but
you may want to bring socks if you get chilly during relaxation.
- You may want to bring a towel or
a mat of your own, though we provide them at the studio.
- As with any exercise class, try
not to eat at least an hour before
class, or eat very light.
- Drinking water before, during,
and especially after your class is important to cleanse
toxins from the body, which will keep you from getting sore.
- Keeping perfumes, colognes, and
cigarette smoke to a minimum is considerate of others.
- The studios are a cell-phone-free
zone for everyone's optimal peace of mind.
- Come early your first few times to get all of the paper work finished and settled into the room.
- If you are late, it is best to wait until the class begins movement before you enter the room. It can be disturbing to others who are in meditation.
Come early to get a good spot and settle in for the whole
experience. Unless otherwise indicated, classes last an hour
and a quarter. If you have time constraints, please let your
instructor know.
Go at your own pace. One of the most important principles
of yoga is that it is a personal practice. Everyone is doing
their own thing, just in the same time and at the same place,
guided by the same instructor. Don't worry about what others
are doing. You'll progress faster and get more out of your
practice if you listen to your body and honor where you are
on any particular day. Rest when you need to rest. Let your
instructor know if you have any injuries or are new and need
helpful modifications.
As with any health program, check with your doctor before
starting yoga if you have any health concerns such as high
blood pressure, heart conditions, injuries or pregnancy.
Usually classes start with a few moments of meditation
to separate you from the stress of your day, followed by a warm
up and a series of poses. Remember to breathe and enjoy. This
is time you've set aside just for you. In the end there is a
period of relaxation--the best part! Let go of all your doing
and just be. You'll feel the difference and be glad you took
this time.
